African Studies Companion, new 5th edition now to be published by Brill
Hans Zell Publishing will not be publishing any further editions of the
African Studies Companion under its own imprint. We are now pleased to announce that agreement has been reached with the distinguished Dutch publisher Koninklijke Brill NV to take over publication as from the 5th and subsequent editions.
Founded in 1683, Brill is a publishing house with a rich history and a strong international focus. The company's headquarters are in Leiden in the Netherlands, with a branch office in Boston in the US. Brill's publications - available in both print and electronic formats - focus on the humanities, the social sciences, and international law. There is also strong list in African, Middle East, and Islamic studies, covering scholarly monographs and journals, as well as reference resources.
A new edition of the African Studies Companion is expected to become available in late 2011 or the early part of 2012. Further details will be announced shortly. All purchasers of the current 4th edition who have registered for online access will be notified about the new publishing arrangements in due course.
Meantime, by agreement with Brill, online access privileges for registered purchasers of the 4th edition have now been extended until a new 5th edition is published. However, please note that no further online updates will be published at this time (a range of entries in the current edition were last updated in July 2009).

Published in dual print and electronic formats, this is a new edition of a
much acclaimed reference source that brings together a wide range of sources of information in the African studies field, covering both print and electronic sources. It evaluates the best online resources, the major general reference tools in print format, current bibliographies and indexing services, biographical, cartographic, statistical and economic resources, as well as film and video resources. Additionally, there are separate sections on African studies library collections and repositories throughout the world, a directory of over 250 African studies journals; listings of news sources, profiles of publishers active in the African studies field, dealers and distributors of African studies materials, African studies societies and associations, major African and international organizations, donor agencies and foundations, awards and prizes in African studies, electronic mailing lists and discussion forums, and more.
The new edition, thoroughly revised and updated and substantially expanded, contains over 2,900 for the most part extensively annotated entries. Several entirely new sections further enhance the utility of this rich information resource.
The fully searchable electronic edition (access bundled with print), with hundreds of click-through Web links to external sites and email addresses, will be regularly updated to provide maximum currency. Providing the online resource as an integral part of the printed guide allows multiple users to access its contents concurrently, and from a place of their own choosing.
